A few different sources pointed us to this CDC report recognizing the public health nightmare that our automobile obsession creates. Just the number of direct injuries and deaths caused by cars is bad enough (ask the next ER doc you see), even if you don't factor in air pollution from emissions and sloth-related diseases from a lazy, drive-through lifestyle.
I'm sure the decision for the CDC to take this stance will be seen by some as politically contentious/activist/radical/whatever, but kudos to them for doing so, as their points are absolutely right. I agree with their set of recommendations, though I'd like to see reducing the amount of driving as the clear top priority of the list.
Terms like "Healthy community design" and "active transportation infrastructure" somewhat dance around the real issue, which the CDC should explicitly state: driving is unhealthy.
