The site WalkableAmerica.org has a handy Walkability Checklist to help you evaluate how pedestrian-friendly your community is. (I think I came across this via walkinginfo.org.)
The checklist is the sort of ying to WalkScore.com's yang--neither is a complete answer in itself. Combined they're still not really a complete answer, but at least you're getting closer. WalkScore crudely evaluates what amenities are within walking distance, without assessing how easy it is to walk there. The checklist helps you assess how easy it is to get around on foot, regardless of whether there's anything nearby to walk to.
I'll be filling out the survey for my own community shortly.
